A Greener Way of Living
Since the 1970s, well before it was trendy to be "green", Bigelow Homes began to do its part to help save the planet. Realizing that there is not an endless supply of the Earth's natural resources to sustain us forever, at our current level of consumption, Bigelow has continually sought ways to be a good steward of our land.
In the process of becoming one of the nation's foremost leaders in residential, energy-efficient construction, as well as a pioneer in green building, we have found ways to reach our initiatives, while at the same time delivering homes that are safer, healthier, and more energy-efficient than most other used or new homes available in today's marketplace.
Imagine being able to live in a home that meets all of your needs and wants, while at the same time being comforted by the fact that you're doing the right thing for our planet.
SAVE THE PLANET WHILE YOU SLEEP
A Bigelow home saves about 3,550 therms of natural gas per year. This means that your new home releases 20 fewer tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. Multiply that by a whole neighborhood of homes, and just over the next 5 years, you’ve produced 4,000 fewer tons of carbon dioxide; the equivalent of removing nearly 2,600 cars off the road.
ENGINEERED FOR VALUE AND ENERGY-EFFICIENCY
Our modern, engineered advanced framing system saves up to 10% of the lumber used in traditional framing techniques while providing optimum structural strength combined with optimum insulation.
GOOD STEWARDS OF THE LAND
We use fast-growing lumber for our floor and roof sheathing. This is a more efficient use of natural resources. Also, where appropriate, we use engineered finger-jointed lumber which not only utilizes scrap wood but also provides 2 x 4’s that are sturdier and straighter than traditional lumber.
IF TREES COULD HUG, THEY’D HUG US BACK!
In addition to using fewer trees to build our homes, much of our construction waste is also recycled. This means less waste goes into the landfills and more trees and other natural resources are preserved.
LET THE SUN SHINE IN
Where applicable, we install light shelves. The advantage of this innovative detail is that they improve the quality of room illumination while at the same time eliminating glare and the discomfort of direct sunlight. They also help preserve the color of upholstery and drapes.
GUARANTEED COOL
Homes are so energy-efficient that we actually guarantee your cooling bills for the first three years. Only Bigelow Homes will make this guarantee.
SHINE A LIGHT ON YOUR SAVINGS
We have been using energy-efficient, compact fluorescent lighting for years because we have understood that it is a great way for homeowners to save money on their monthly energy bills.
WE HAVE OUR DUCTS IN A ROW
We design our homes so that all ductwork is within the thermal envelope. There are no ducts in the attic or exterior walls where they can increase heating and cooling costs by 30%.
BREATHE EASIER
Properly sized heating and cooling systems based on computer simulation and analysis ensure increased overall indoor comfort, air quality, and energy savings.
STATE OF-THE-ART WINDOWS
By installing Low-E (emissivity) windows we not only reduce short wave infrared radiation, we also reduce the fading of upholstery and drapes by 80%. At the same time, you’re saving energy.
GUARANTEED LOW COOLING AND HEATING COSTS
Bigelow Homes is so confident in the energy efficiency of our homes that we will guarantee your cooling costs are *$400 or less for the entire year in Plum Creek and Creekside (Kyle, Texas). In Celebration (Aurora, Illinois), your heating cost will be ♦$400 or less for the entire year. We are the only builder that can make this claim.
* This applies to The Pecos, The Blanco, The Sabine, and The Angelina models. Larger homes include a $600/yr cooling guarantee.
♦ This applies to The Jubilee, The Fiesta, The Melody, and The Merriment models. Larger homes include a $600/yr. heating guarantee.
